⚠️ RAIN ALERT!
This weekend's forecast guarantees one thing: if you're training or racing, you're going to get wet.
Rain on race day doesn’t mean disaster. It means adjustment. Here are 10 tips to stay calm, safe, and competitive in the rain:
1. Adjust your mindset early. Rain doesn’t mean a bad race or day, it just means different. Focus on execution of process, make adversity your advantage.
2. Look around. Rain, clouds, and chop make buoys harder to spot. Sight more often and identify larger landmarks or objects for sighting before you start.
3. Hurry slowly during water entry/exit. Wet ramps, slick grass, muddy shorelines; move with focus, not speed.
4. Expect slick roads on the bike. Lower tire pressure 5-10 PSI for better grip. Crosswalks, manhole covers, and painted lane line become slick hazards when wet, use caution.
5. Rim brakes? Brake early, brake smoothly. Rain reduces braking power. Feather the brakes gently, especially before turns, and give yourself more time. Disc brakes? 😎
6. Keep transition efficient. Organize your gear under a plastic bag or towel. Slip your shoes in a plastic grocery bag, other items can be in an easy to grab large baggie.
7. Watch for debris and puddles. Rain brings gravel, oil on to the road, holes can be covered by water. Scan for hazards constantly.
8. Keep your run mechanics clean. Shorter stride, quicker cadence clean up form with sloppy conditions or soaked shoes.
9. Lube to prevent blisters and chafing. Rain multiplies friction. Protect your feet, neck, arms, and anywhere gear rubs. And when done? Relube your bike chain!
10. Control what you can. You can’t change the weather. But you can control your focus, effort, and mindset. An attitude of play and lightness also helps!
